William Contreras won World Series MVP as Milwaukee beat Tampa Bay in five games. Here are the key performances and Friday’s parade details.
The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday, Oct. 28, to win the first title in franchise history.
Milwaukee took the Series four games to one. Tampa Bay avoided a sweep with a 4-3 win in 12 innings in Game 4, but the Brewers came back the next night and finished the job.
Who Won World Series MVP?
William Contreras won World Series MVP after hitting .381 (8-for-21) with four RBIs. His sixth-inning RBI double in Game 5 helped Milwaukee pull away.
The batting average only tells part of the story. Contreras also threw out four runners trying to steal, which helped contain a Tampa Bay offense that leaned on its speed. His work behind the plate belongs in the MVP conversation every bit as much as his bat.
Who Were the Stars of the World Series?
Contreras won the trophy, but he had plenty of help.
Jackson Chourio hit .458. He led Milwaukee with 11 hits in 24 at-bats and gave the Rays very few quiet nights.
Cooper Pratt hit .421 with seven RBIs. The rookie went 8-for-19 and drove in two runs in the clincher. Between Pratt and Chourio, Brewers fans have plenty to look forward to after the parade.
Jacob Misiorowski threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Game 5. A right calf cramp ended his outing, but he had already put Milwaukee in position to win. He finished the postseason with a 1.89 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 19 innings in four starts.
Aaron Ashby finished with 18 consecutive scoreless innings in relief. That’s the longest streak by a reliever in a single postseason, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, passing Andrew Miller’s 16 innings in 2016.
Trevor Megill got the final six outs in Game 5. He handled the eighth, then worked around a run in the ninth to close out the title.
