Well, I wanted to avoid being a Red Sox fanboy this offseason, but with the news that the Red Sox are meeting with Juan Soto this week, I am officially back to being a fanboy. Sue me.
The meeting itself does not mean much. The Red Sox are simply joining a long list of teams meeting with Soto in Southern California this week. I will add the current betting odds below. These are from Draftkings, and by no means do I think you should be betting on where this guy lands. If you are, please seek help.
Yankees: -130 (bet $10 to win $17.69 total)
Mets: +160 (bet $10 to win $26 total)
Any other team: +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total)
Dodgers: +1100 (bet $10 to win $120 total)
Cubs: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)
Blue Jays: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)
Giants: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)
Nationals: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)
Red Sox: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)
I am not here to say that the Red Sox are the favorites; I don’t think they are, but the idea that the Yankees are blows my mind.
Juan Soto doesn't prioritize winning. He left a team that had just won a World Series and offered him almost $500 million. He showed no interest in staying with the Padres, who tried to build a superteam around him. Those who think he will remain with the Yankees for a 33-year-old Aaron Judge after what happened in the World Series need help.
The Yankees have Anthony Volpe, Luis Gil, and Austin Wells. It's a great young trio, but do you really think Juan Soto is looking at Austin Wells and saying, “Yeah, this is the guy I want to spend the next ten years with.” No way, Jose.
The Yankees were dismantled in the World Series by a team practically disabled by injuries. The Dodgers are only going to get better, and the Yankees are only going to get older.
This opens up the door for teams like the Red Sox.
They have the money to make this deal happen. Whether they use it or not is irrelevant. They have it.
They have Rafael Devers—a young Dominican star just like Soto.
Great young farm system with long-term hope.
Great fans, stadium, history, endorsements, etc.
Dean Ciriaco covering the team.
Again, Soto is looking for money, and the Red Sox can pay him what he wants. Compared to all other teams outside the Dodgers, I think the Red Sox have the best setup for someone who plans to sign for at least the next ten years.
I give the Red Sox a 20% chance at landing Juan Soto at 12:06 pm on November 12th.
