This past week, the Yankees took on two solid teams from the Western side of the country: the San Diego Padres (25-14) and the “Sacramento” Athletics (21-20). The offense has been clicking, yes, a large part due to Aaron Judge, but with Paul Goldschmidt, Jasson Dominguez, Ben Rice, and Cody Bellinger stepping up this past week, it makes beating the Yankees a very tough job, as we saw in the result.
Series 1: San Diego Padres (Home)
Game 1: L 4-3 | Game 2: W 12-3 | Game 3: W 4-3 (F/10)
Series 2: Athletics (Away)
Game 1: W 10-2 | Game 2: L 11-7 | Game 3: W 12-2
Max Fried is becoming a frequent flyer in this section. He was simply awesome in his start against the Padres. Rodon somehow lost a game in which he had 10 strikeouts. That being said, he pitched rather well across two starts this past week and continues to deliver solid results. Overall, this season he owns a 3.29 ERA across 54 ⅔ innings pitched to pair with 67 strikeouts. You cannot complain about that!
Will Warren looked sharp against the Athletics. I needed to see this out of Warren. He has been inconsistent so far this season, but with Carrasco being DFA’d, the Yankees also needed this. Marcus Stroman is still dealing with pain/discomfort in his knee so he remains without a timetable. Luis Gil is still rehabilitating from his lat injury. The nice thing is that the offense is carrying the team right now with Stroman, Gil, and Cole sidelined.
I am super curious as to who the Yankees will go after at the trade deadline, would love to see them add a couple of veteran starters that don’t cost too much.
The Yankees seem to have found some light following Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s injury. New York has teed off on opposing pitchers since last week, hitting thirteen bombs in the process. They have also walked twenty-seven times across their last six games, which is something I love to see. The Yankees lead the league in Walks and are in the top-5 across multiple offensive stats in the league, including Average, Walks, Runs, Doubles, Home Runs, RBI, Total Bases, OBP, SLG, and OPS.
DJ LeMahieu is joining the team this week in Seattle. He can add some spark to this team and help at both 2B/3B while Chisholm Jr. is out. Unfortunately, I think he will be out for longer than expected. We may even see Giancarlo Stanton added to the fold by the end of the month!
Imagine a healthy/productive lineup that looks like this…
Paul Goldschmidt 1B
Aaron Judge RF
Austin Wells C
Giancarlo Stanton/Ben Rice DH
Cody Bellinger / Trent Grisham CF
Jasson Dominguez LF
Jazz Chisholm Jr. 3B
Anthony Volpe SS
DJ LeMahieu 2B
Bats to Highlight:
Aaron Judge —> 3 HR | .333 BA | 6 R | 3 BB | 1.199 OPS
Jasson Dominguez —> 3 HR | 7 RBI | .368 BA | 8 R | 4 BB | 1.353 OPS
Cody Bellinger —> 1 HR | 4 R | .333 BA | 2 RBI | 2 BB | .867 OPS
Notable Team Hitting Statistics Thru 5/12:
+ 3rd in AVG (.263)
+ 1st in BB (162)
+ 1st in R (235)
- 6th in SO (358)
The Yankees are starting their week in Seattle to face off against a 22-17 Mariners team that finds itself sitting atop the American League West standings. If the Yankees can take 2 of 3 in that series, that would be incredible, as they are slated to face Emerson Hancock (5.70 ERA), Bryan Woo (3.25 ERA), and Luis Castillo (3.95 ERA). Following a tough away series, they return home to square up against inter-city rival, the New York Mets (26-15). I cannot wait to see how the crowd handles Juan Soto’s homecoming. My gut feeling is telling me he is going to mash unfortunately.
