This week, we have the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good news was that the Yankees crushed nine home runs in one game. That is actually insane. The bad news, Jonathan Loasigia is getting a second opinion on his elbow, as it looks like the rest of his season is in jeopardy with a flexor strain where surgery might be required. Yikes. The ugly…do I really need to highlight what Boston did to the Yankees this past weekend?
The Boston series was an embarrassment. It didn’t even appear as the Yankees cared about losing to their longtime rival in a pivotal series. Not to mention this series was in NEW YORK. I am just happy the Yankees didn’t get swept. The defense is so bad. The bats are the only thing that gives me hope of doing anything in the playoffs at this point.
If the bats are cold entering the postseason, the Yankees are dead on arrival come playoff time.
Series 1: Tampa Bay Rays (Away) → Won 2-0 (Sweep! lol)
Series 2: New York Yankees (Home) → Lost 3-1
I am only going to talk about two pitchers this week. First and foremost, Cam Schlittler had a perfect game bid through six innings, which was awesome to see from the rookie! He looked totally in control and was excellent in his latest start. Hopefully, this will help his confidence grow as he is still getting acclimated to Major League Baseball.
Hard to ignore Devin Williams. Small sample size from this week, but three innings, seven strikeouts, and zero earned runs will get my attention. Anything positive for Williams is something Yankee fans need to take notice of, given the way his 2025 campaign has gone.
Arms to Highlight Across the Past Week:
Cam Schlittler —> 6.2 IP | 8 K | 0.00 ERA | 1 QS | 0.45 WHIP
Devin Williams —> 3.0 IP | 7 K | 0.00 ERA | 1 HLD | 1 SV | 0.67 WHIP
Carlos Rodon—> 11.2 IP | 8 K | 3.09 ERA | 2 W | 1 QS | 1.11 WHIP
Notable Team Cumulative Pitching Statistics Thru 8/24:
+ 4th in H (1,000)
+ 4th in SO (1,157)
- 18th in QS (43)
- 17th in ERA (4.02)
The problem is not the bats. This team has the most walks in baseball as well as the most total bases. Sure, they are middle of the pack when it comes to team batting average, but they are tied for the 2nd most runs scored in the league.
As long as Aaron Judge can get hot at the right time, I have full confidence in this lineup. There is too much talent not to be able to make a playoff run (if they do in fact make the playoffs…).
Bats to Highlight Across The Past Week:
Giancarlo Stanton —> 4 HR | 7 RBI | .375 BA | 6 R | 2 BB | 1.632 OPS
Jazz Chisholm Jr. —> 3 HR | 6 RBI | .300 BA | 4 R | 1 BB | 1.083 OPS
Trent Grisham —> 4 HR | 4 R | .250 BA | 3 BB | 1.083 OPS
Notable Team Cumulative Hitting Statistics Thru 8/24:
- 13th in AVG (.250)
+ 1st in BB (500)
+ T-2nd in R (666)
+ 1st in TB (1,989)
- 25th in SO (1,139)
The good news is that the Yankees’ schedule going forward is one of the friendliest schedules in the MLB. Home against Washington and then on the road to play the Chicago White Sox. Both series are winnable. I wouldn’t hate a sweep, or two?!?
