Every year, I spend the week before Christmas reviewing The Skippers View's analytics. I break down what worked, what didn’t work, and what we can improve on. For those of you who have been following us for the past ten months, this will be the first time you have heard me talk about everything that we do here.
During the summer of 2021, Brett called me almost daily to discuss baseball (lol, slight Sam reference here). He had recently joined my dad’s fantasy team and had reignited his love for the sport. I thought let’s do something with all the time spent talking baseball, so I suggested we turn it into some content. We settled on The Skippers View, and I created a website and Twitter account on the spot. Entering into the social media/baseball content world was daunting. So, I spent a season just watching and following along. I was posting and replying, mostly observing the trends and what worked.
On January 1st, 2022, we began the refresh of The Skippers View, and it really was a slow grind that year as we went from 50 followers to 5,000 on X while trying to build the website and podcast simultaneously. I learned a lot, including that some significant national websites will take our posts and push them as actual breaking news (Wander Franco situation.) For a moment, I thought I would get chased after for defamation, and then I realized that he wouldn’t be able to do that from jail. I also learned that the most significant sports websites regurgitate fans' posts on X.
Really, all significant platforms steal from X and post it off as their own. If I had a dollar for every time Sam got his posts stolen and put on Instagram, I would be rich. X is truly the public square, espcially when it comes to baseball. And thru that, we have been able to build our own little community. Which is a perfect time to run through everyone who has been writing for us so far this year. Keep an eye out for some more new writers very soon….
I highly suggest going and following all of the above on X so you can see everything that they do. You can also find all their blog sections on the top of our website!
I am not going to publicy post our numbers, but we surpassed all our goals for 2024. I even readjusted some when we hit July and we still hit all our numbers. The blog has really become my favorite part of it all, because I can see all of you awesome humans that continue to click on all the articles that these great writers put out. One or two and maybe I would think it was an accident. But consistently for every blog, well maybe not all of Brett’s, the fans are clicking and engaging and that is awesome.
2025 is going to be a very fun year for all of us. I truly believe that, if all goes well, we will continue to etch out our little corner of the baseball content world. If you are somehow reading this and haven’t subscribed, please do so below!
