The Jim Schlossnagle Drama
Disgusting behavior amid a Championship run for the former Aggies Skipper
If you’re not immersed in the College Baseball World (you should follow us), you know that the College World Series just ended, where the Tennessee Volunteers took home their first program National Title, over the Texas A&M Aggies. The season was very emotional for both squads, with A&M losing one of their veteran leaders in Braden Montgomery while returning a ton of young talent heading into 2025, definitely a front-runner for next season. If you are blind to this sport, head coach Jim Schlossnagle announced that he and most of his coaching staff, Nolan Cain, Michael Earley, and Max Weiner, are leaving College Station and heading to Austin to coach at Texas.
Leaving your school for a rival is one thing, but the stories and issues around him leaving are what have me, Aggie Nation, and the College Baseball World in utter disgust. After the final CWS game after an Aggie loss, a reporter asked Schlossnagle about his future at A&M in which he had a disgusted response to this question: “Yeah, I mean I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you,” said Schlossnagle. “But I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. And that hasn’t changed in my mind. That’s unfair to talk about something like that. That would be like you asking (Braden) Montgomery if he is going to sign in the draft.”
Let me be clear: Braden Montgomery is projected in the Top 10 of this year's MLB Draft, and it’s pretty clear he’ll be signing, so it’s not a great comparison.
Less than 24 hours after this comment, and stating that he had taken the job at Texas A&M to “never take another job again,” he announced his departure to Austin. This alone is a heinous act to a great program, but I can’t fathom what the guys are feeling. With so many returning for 2025, you think they’re in an excellent position for a run with the coaches and a significant portion of the team returning, but it goes a step further. Now that the dust has settled on the season, a few Longhorns have hit the transfer portal in the last 24 hours. They claim they were informed of Schlossnagle’s takeover weeks ago after Texas was eliminated from the College Station Regional.
This whole situation is awful. I feel so deeply for the guys at A&M, who got abandoned after their coach stood up for them all season. Some breaking news just hit; now, Jace LaViolette, a 2025 Golden Spikes front-runner and potential 1.01 in 2025, has hit the portal, along with stud Sophomore outfielder Gavin Grahovac. Omaha breakout Kaeden Kent has also announced he’s entering the portal today. This program is being torn down after an incredible season, and this is no thanks to the lack of respect from their Skipper. Schloss should be ashamed, especially after his comments. It shows you what kind of coach he is.
My final thought: my feelings have nothing to do with him taking the Texas job. You should go where you want, and get your bag, that’s sports. It’s the way he went about it. He belittled reporters for asking him if he was staying, reassuring players that this was his group and he was in it for the long haul. Then, finding out he made this decision weeks before the season was over, in the midst of a potential Championship run—disgusting behavior.
