The 2025 Trade Deadline Overview
The 2025 Trade Deadline was one full of crazy trades, late moves and overall, one of the best in recent years. If you're overwhelmed, don't panic, I lined up the most notable trades here.
1. Mason Miller & J.P. Sears to the San Diego Padres.
Padres receive:
CP RHP Mason Miller (4 years of control)
SP LHP J.P. Sears (3 years of control)
Athletics receive:
SS Leodalis De Vries (#3 Prospect)
SP RHP Braden Nett (#7 SDP Prospect)
RP RHP Eduarniel Nunez (#14 SDP Prospect)
SP RHP Henry Baez (#16 SDP Prospect)
The Athletics and Padres gave us the first big trade of the deadline. The Padres bolster their bullpen even further, while the Athletics get a fantastic return. De Vries is one of the most highly regarded prospects in baseball with plus hitting tools across the board. Nett has the upside of a mid-rotation starter but has work to do on his command. Eduarniel Nunez’s elite velocity and stuff makes him a high-end lottery ticket with closer upside, while Baez is a solid pitching prospect with above-average command.
It’s a lot to give up. And if De Vries turns out as good as expected, this could be another trade that doesn’t look good for Preller. Only way the value matches up is if the Padres win a World Series or stretch Miller back out to make him a front-end starter.
2. Carlos Correa back to the Houston Astros.
Astros receive:
SS Carlos Correa (6 years/$200 million contract w/$104 million remaining)
$33 million in cash to cover rest of contract.
Twins receive:
RP LHP Matt Mikuslki (26 y/o at A+)
The injury-plagued Astros re-unite with a fan favourite, once again showing they are absolutely serious about pushing for a World Series again. Correa is likely to fit in at 3B with Isaac Paredes out for the year. The Twins shed a heavy contract for, in their eyes, an underperforming, injury-prone shortstop.
Correa’s health and performance will be the ultimate decider, but overall, it feels like a light return for a player like Correa, even with his contract and injury history in mind.
3. Jhoan Duran to the Philladelphia Phillies.
Phillies receive:
CP RHP Jhoan Duran (2 years of control)
Twins receive:
C Eduardo Tait (#50 MLB, #3 Phillies Prospect)
SP RHP Mick Abel (#6 Phillies Prospect)
The Phillies finally get their much-needed closer in Jhoan Duran, which strengthens their case as one of the favourites for the Fall Classic. The return for the Twins is great. Tait has a .753 OPS in A-ball as an 18-year old catcher with plus power already, while Abel is another promising, young arm for the Twins to develop at the MLB level.
A pretty fair trade, helping both teams towards their (new) objectives.
4. Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets.
Mets receive:
RP RHP Tyler Rogers (Rental, UFA in 2026)
CP RHP Ryan Helsley (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Giants receive:
RP RHP José Butto
OF Drew Gilbert (#14 Mets Prospect)
SP RHP Blake Tidwell (#10 Mets Prospect)
Cardinals receive:
3B/SS Jesus Baez (#6 Mets Prospect)
SP RHP Nate Dohm (#25 Mets Prospect)
SP/RP RHP Frank Elissalt (56.1 IP, 3.04 ERA, 29.3% K% at A/A+)
The Mets paid a hefty price for both relievers, but this has elevated their bullpen from solid to one of the best in baseball. Tyler Rogers brings consistency in a position where consistency is rare, and Helsley has proven to have elite-closer stuff. Drew Gilbert, Nate Dohm, Elissalt & Butto are all solid pieces, but won’t light the world on fire. Tidwell’s ceiling is one of a mid-rotation starter, but could end up in the pen if he doesn’t harness his control. Jesus Baez is the biggest talent here, with 20-HR power, improving discipline and great bat-to-ball skills.
Both the Cardinals and Giants don’t have the best track record of developing young players, and this fills an immediate need for the Mets without giving up their top-tier prospects.
5. Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners.
Mariners receive:
3B Eugenio Suarez (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Diamondbacks receive:
3B/1B Tyler Locklear (#14 Mariners Prospect)
RP RHP Juan Burgos (#25 Mariners Prospect)
RP RHP Hunter Cranton (#91 2024 MLB Draft Pick)
Expectations were that Suarez would fetch a huge package. With this, the Mariners have kept all EIGHT Top 100 Prospects while trading for an elite offensive force at 3B. Locklear has been on a tear at AAA since making a swing change, shown by his .316 BA, .942 OPS, 19 HR & 18 SB while improving all underlying metrics. Both Burgos & Cranton are RP-first prospects, and Locklear will be the one needing to provide immediate value to the Diamondbacks at first base.
It feels like the Diamondbacks could have gotten more for a player that has 55 HR’s and 162 RBI’s over the last calendar year.
6. Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays
Blue Jays receive:
SP RHP Shane Bieber ($16 million player option for 2026)
Guardians receive:
SP RHP Khal Stephen (#5 Blue Jays Prospect)
The former Cy Young winner is headed to the Blue Jays! Bieber hasn’t pitched more than 30 innings since the start of the 2024 season, but has made a good rehab start 7/29 (4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K’s at AA) with his fastball sitting 92-93 MPH. Stephen is an underrated prospect with potentially three above-average pitches and a mid-rotation ceiling. He has a 2.06 ERA through 91 MiLB innings split between A & A+.
Feels like a trade that could go one of both ways. If Bieber is back to old levels, it might be a light return.
7. David Bednar and Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees.
Yankees receive:
CP David Bednar (1 year of control, UFA in 2027)
CP Camilo Doval (2 years of control)
Pirates receive:
C Rafael Flores (#8 Yankees Prospect)
C Edgleen Perez (#16 Yankees Prospect)
OF Brian Sanchez (#25 Yankees Prospect)
Giants receive:
C Jesus Rodriguez (#29 Yankees Porspect)
IF Parks Harber (.884 OPS at A+ as 23 y/o)
SP RHP Trystan Vrieling (4.50 ERA at AA)
Prospect to be named later.
Overall, the Yankees haven’t given up much for two arms that have been elite closers for their respective teams in recent years. Both are having a bounceback year, and only Rafael Flores has shown flashes of a potential MLB player.
The Yankees now have three former elite closers in David Bednar, Camilo Doval & Devin Williams.
8. Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano to the San Diego Padres.
Padres receive:
OF Ramon Laureano ($6.5 million club option, UFA in 2027)
1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Orioles receive:
SP LHP Boston Bateman (#6 Padres Prospect)
SS Cobb Hightower (#8 Padres Prospect)
RP Tyson Neighbors (#20 Padres Prospect)
1B Victor Figueroa (#29 Padres Prospect)
IF Brandon Butterworth
Another steep prospect price to pay for two bats. But both O’Hearn and Laureano fill immediate needs for the Padres, and bolsters their line-up massively. This trade alone would have been enough for the Padres to have a successful deadline. Orioles get a ton of good, young prospects in return, with the Top 3 being genuine MLB-caliber.
9. Merrill Kelly to the Texas Rangers.
Rangers receive:
SP RHP Merrill Kelly (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Diamondbacks receive:
SP LHP Kohl Drake (#9 Rangers Prospect)
SP LHP Mitch Bratt (#14 Rangers Prospect)
SP RHP David Hagaman (#16 Rangers Prosepct)
Merrill Kelly is one of the few available SP’s that got moved, and the D-Backs got a nice return. Bratt holds a 3.18 ERA through 90 AA-innings, Drake a 3.10 ERA split between AA & AAA and Hagaman has a sub-3 ERA at A+. All three have a K% over 25%, solid command and could all be big-league material in the future.
Rest of trades that happened:
Kyle Finnegan to the Detroit Tigers.
Tigers receive:
RP RHP Kyle Finnegan (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Nationals receive:
R.J. Sales (66.1 IP, 2.71 ERA, 24% K% at A-ball)
Josh Randall (#20 Tigers Prospect)
The Nationals trade their veteran closer for two, likely-to-be RP’s in the future. Tigers add experience to their pen. Both young arms need development, but have solid upside.
Adrian Houser & Griffin Jax to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Rays receive:
SP RHP Adrian Houser (Rental, UFA in 2026)
RP RHP Griffin Jax (2 years of control)
Twins receive:
SP RHP Taj Bradley (4 years of control)
White Sox receive:
RP RHP Ben Peoples (2.65 ERA in 37 AAA IP)
IF Curtis Mead
SP RHP Duncan Davitt (4.08 ERA w/25% K% in 102 AAA IP)
Overall, weird moves by the Rays. They sold without really selling, but paid quite a hefty price for Houser, who’s one of the luckiest pitchers in baseball, is a rental and is 32. Taj Bradley is loved by the models, and is another young arm for the Twins to develop.
Dustin May to the Boston Red Sox:
Red Sox receive:
SP/RP Dustin May (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Dodgers receive:
OF James Tibbs III (#10 Red Sox Prospect, Giants’ 1st RD pick in 24’)
OF Zach Ehrard (.731 OPS through 57 AA games, 22 y/o)
Looks like a great trade for the Dodgers. May is injury prone, and they get a prospect back that was the 13th overall pick just one year ago. Not the trade Red Sox fans were hoping for.
Danny Coulombe and Phill Maton to the Texas Rangers
Rangers receive:
RP LHP Danny Coloumbe (Rental, UFA in 2026)
RP RHP Phill Maton (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Cardinals receive:
RP RHP Skylar Hales (7+ ERA at AAA)
SP LHP Mason Molina (3.41 ERA through 71 A/A+ IP, 22 y/o)
Twins receive:
SP LHP Garrett Horn (2.92 ERA through 24.2 A-ball IP, 22 y/o)
Two great moves by the Rangers to help their weak bullpen without giving up too much prospect capital.
José Caballero to the New York Yankees:
Yankees receive:
UTIL José Caballero (4 years of control)
Rays receive:
OF Everson Pereira (#13 Yankees Prospect)
Player to be named later.
The Yankees get a super-utilityman to replace Oswald Peraza, who also leads the league in stolen bases. Pereira has lost much of his prospect shine, but has significantly decreased his K% in 2025 while delivering above-average power and is a plus defender.
Bailey Falter, Stephen Kolek & Ryan Bergert to the Kansas City Royals.
Royals receive:
SP/RP RHP Ryan Bergert (#13 Padres Prospect)
SP/RP RHP Stephen Kolek (2+ years of control)
SP LHP Bailey Falter (3 years of control)
Padres receive:
C Freddy Fermin (4 years of control)
Pirates receive:
RP LHP Evan Sisk
1B Callan Moss (.790 OPS at A+ at 21 y/o)
The Royals receive three pitchers that are under club control for an extended period of time. Padres pay quite a price for Freddy Fermin, who hasn’t shown more ability than the ability of a back-up catcher. Pirates pick up Callan Moss, a prospect lvoed by evaluators for his great swing decisions, bat-to-ball skills and power potential.
Alex Call to the Los Angeles Dodgers:
Dodgers receive:
OF Alex Call (4 years of control)
Nationals receive:
SP RHP Sean Linan
SP RHP Eriq Swan
A solid return for Alex Call considering the role he’s going to play for the Dodgers and the depth the Nationals have in the outfield. Linan has a great changeup, and Swan has high-octane reliever written all over him.
Jesus Sanchez to the Houston Astros.
Astros receive:
OF Jesus Sanchez (2 years of control)
Marlins receive:
SP RHP Ryan Gusto (2 years pre-arb)
SS Chase Jaworsky (24 SB, contact-first)
OF Esmil Valencia (50 SB, 5 HR through 19 A-ball games)
The Astros add another outfielder that they so desperately needed, and Sanchez has more room to grow as well. Marlins add another young starter and two prospects to add depth to their already stacked farm.
Willi Castro to the Chicago Cubs.
Cubs receive:
UTIL Willi Castro (Rental, UFA in 2026)
Twins receive:
SP RHP Ryan Gallagher (3.43 ERA through 84 AA IP)
SP RHP Sam Armstrong (4.62 ERA through 89 AA IP)
The Cubs DFA’d Vidal Brujan, and now get a wildly superior superutilityman back. Castro can play anywhere, and the return for a player like that could be considered light - Castro has a .743 OPS in 2025.
More moves:
RP Brock Stewart to the Dodgers for OF James Outman.
UTIL Will Wagner to the Padres for C Brandon Valenzuela.
RP Jake Bird to the Yankees for 2B Roc Riggio and LHP Ben Shields.
OF Cedric Mullins to the Mets for SP Raimon Gomez, Anthony Nunez & Chandler Marsh.
OF Harrison Bader to the Phillies for OF Hendry Mendez & RHP Geremy Villoria.
OF Mike Yastrzemski to the Royals for RHP Yunior Marte.
SP Charlie Morton to the Tigers for RP LHP Micah Ashman.
LHP Adam Serwinowski, RHP Paul Gervase, C Ben Rortvedt to Dodgers. (1)
C Hunter Feduccia, RHP Brian Van Belle to the Rays. (2)
SP Zack Littell to the Reds (3) - 1,2,3 as part of a three-way trade.
SP/RP Steven Matz to the Red Sox for 1B/3B Blaze Jordan.
OF Ramon Urias to the Astros for RHP Twine Palmer.
SP/RP Mike Soroka to the Cubs for IF Ronny Cruz and OF Christian Franklin.
3B Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Reds for SS Sammy Stafura and RP Taylor Rogers.
A lot of prospect capital has been moved, and divisions have been shaken up.
Let’s see how the rest of the season plays out.
Thank you for reading.
