I wanted to break up the monotony of just writing about the Red Sox, so I decided to form a blog around my least favorite Red Sox player.
I just want to say, that I do not think these players “stink.” However, they stink right now, and I wanted to look a little deeper into why. Some can’t hit the fastball, some are old, and some might have gotten their bag and given up. Let’s dive in and look at some “stars” that stink right now.
Luis Robert Jr. — CF, Chicago White Sox
Stats: .152 AVG | 3 HR | 8 RBI | .547 OPS | wRC+ 61
What's Going Wrong: Besides being on the White Sox? He can’t hit a fastball. He is batting .150 against fastballs this year with a 37.5 K%. This is a 100 point dip from 2024, and 150 point dip from 2023. I imagine the White Sox would still like to move him, but I don’t know who takes him right now.
Triston Casas — 1B, Boston Red Sox
Stats: .172 AVG | 3 HR | 10 RBI | .583 OPS | wRC + 60
What's Going Wrong: Casas is playing the worse baseball of his career, and I am frankly not surprised. Similar to Robert, Casas is not making contact with fastballs. He also is swinging WAY too often on the first pitch. It is something that the Red Sox announcers spoke about, and clearly Cora noticed as he has spoken to Casas about reigning it back. To me, Casas would have been demoted if it wasn’t for his walk off and two home runs last week. If you watched any of the games, you would know that only one of those hits was impressive.
Max Muncy — 3B, Los Angeles Dodgers
Stats: .173 AVG | 0 HR | 4 RBI | .527 OPS | wRC + 59
What's Going Wrong: I mean he is 34, so this really isn’t that much of a surprise. His primary value came from his power, which started to disappear last year, and has vanished in 2025. He is also striking out 34.4% of the time, which is a significant increase over his career average which is 24.9. I asked resident Dodgers fan Overdue Sports his thoughts.
“He’s like a dog’s buttocks, but he will still find a way to hit 25 dingers. Probably won’t sniff .220 though.”
Marcus Semien — 2B, Texas Rangers
Stats: .150 AVG | 2 HR | 12 RBI | .436 OPS | wRC + 25
What's Going Wrong: Semien’s wOBA is in the bottom 1% of all MLB. He isn’t striking out anymore than he usually does, but is ability to get on base is gone. This continues a downward trend that began in 2024, but has been exacerbated here in 2025. He is batting an unbelievable .086 against breaking balls, and a ungodly .000 against offspeed pitches. I went and watched some of his at bats after seeing his stats, and well, he looks old.
Father time always wins.
Willy Adames — SS, San Francisco Giants
Stats: .202 AVG | 1 HR | 14 RBI | .542 OPS | wRC + 58
What's Going Wrong: Feels too early to start making comments on the Giants overpaying for Adames. But what the heck, the Giants overpaid for Adames. In terms of percentile rankings, Adames has nothing to write home about right now. Unlike Casas and Robert, he is making contact with fastballs. It is not great, but isn’t far off what he has done in previous seasons. However, he can’t hit a breaking ball for his life right now, so pitchers are starting to pepper him with them.
Anthony Santander — RF, Toronto Blue Jays
Stats: .179 AVG | 3 HR | 9 RBI | .562 OPS | wRC + 65
What's Going Wrong: Speaking of terrible free agent signings, I give you Anthony Santander. The Blue Jays were desperate to land a “big” name free agent, so they vastly overpaid for Santander. He has rewarded them with three home runs, and that is about it. Very rarely do you see a xBA as bad as the players actual batting average, but currently Santander boasts a .199 xBA which puts him in the bottom 6% of the league. All three of his home runs have come on meatballs down the middle (see photo below)
