The years of rumors and talks about Ryan McMahon going to the Yankees are now no longer just rumors. It’s official that the Yankees will send two pitching prospects in Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz in exchange for the 30-year-old third baseman. Here’s what you need to know about McMahon before he takes the field in Pinstripes!
Standard Profile:
McMahon is a left handed, power hitting third baseman that has managed to tally at least 20 HR in five of his eight seasons before 2025. He’s on pace to hit 20+ as well this year, with 16 at the time of writing this. While he won’t hit for average, his power approach should translate well to the short porch in the Bronx.
Advanced Profile:
McMahon’s advanced profile shows a bat that walks at a high rate, but comes with a lot of swing-and-miss. He ranks in the 2nd percentile in Whiff% and the 3rd in K%. This is really the only major concern in the advanced profile. When he makes contact, it’s hit hard. He ranks in the 98th percentile for AvgEV, and the 87th for Hard-Hit%.
The Glove:
It’s no secret that the left side of the infield defensively has been lackluster for the Yankees this year and even beyond. McMahon solves that problem instantly. His 4 OAA at the hot corner are good enough to rank him in the 91st percentile, and while the arm strength is average, the defense will surely be a plus on top of his power hitting profile.
Battled Ball Data:
McMahon won’t take the ball the other way often. He has an Oppo% of 19.6% at the time of writing this, and a Pull% of 40.6%. That Pull% combined with his Pull AIR% of 18.8% will play very nicely in Yankee Stadium with the short porch in right field. Especially for a bat that hits fly balls 41.5% of the time.
McMahon’s 2025:
After a brutal start to the year, McMahon bounced back nicely in May with a 135 wRC+. He regressed back a bit in June as his wRC+ across that month was slightly above average at 102. Since the start of the 2nd half, he’s put up 0.5 fWAR, with 3 HR, and a 225 wRC+. The Yankees are getting him at the right time.
Additional 2025 Splits:
Some other intriguing splits to look at with McMahon in 2025:
At home vs. RHP, McMahon has a 143 wRC+ with a .917 OPS. Again with that short porch, that split is very encouraging.
When pulling the baseball, McMahon has a .400 AVG with a 1.107 OPS, and 193 wRC+. When he goes to the opposite field he does tend to have success as well, with a .318 AVG.
McMahon will also provide some stability to the middle of the Yankees order. When batting 5th this year he’s recorded a 141 wRC+.
Away From Coors Concerns
McMahon has undoubtedly benefitted from the elevation at Coors Field. It’ll be interesting to see if Yankee Stadium benefits him just as much as Coors did. A .189 AVG and a 64 wRC+ on the road this year isn’t the most encouraging data. However, for a guy who hits the ball hard with a pull heavy profile can mitigate those concerns.
