Review of "Season of Shattered Dreams"
Postwar Baseball, The Spokane Indians, and A Tragic Bus Crash That Changed Everything
This past Sunday, I had the privilege of interviewing Eric Vickrey, author of the new book “Season of Shattered Dreams: The Spokane Indians, and A Tragic Bus Crash That Changed Everything.” As this was my 1st author interview/book review, this was an exciting moment for me, and I hope Eric enjoyed his time on the show with Dean and myself!
A little bit about Eric, he is the author now of two books Runnin’ Redbirds: The World Champion 1982 St. Louis Cardinals, and Season of Shattered Dreams. On top of that, Eric has written over 15 pieces for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). After reading his latest book, I can easily say that I will be making my way through the rest of his work.
So…let’s talk a little bit about the book without giving too many spoilers. For starters ANYONE who is a fan of the game of baseball, likes history, or simply likes sports should pick this book up immediately. I was immediately fascinated with this story as it was a piece of history that I had no idea existed. To think of the young men who just got back from fighting a war, are at the peak of their lives playing professional baseball and to have it ripped away in an instant. Well unfortunately that is the story for some brave souls who were a part of the 1946 Spokane Indians.
Vickrey does an excellent job of incorporating the history of the game into a story that ties into the emotional toll of young baseball players who underwent one of the most devastating accidents in the history of sports. For me, the combo of learning about World War II baseball, the Spokane Indians, and the history of baseball made this a must-read.
Thank you Eric for joining Dean and me on the show! We hope nothing but the best for you and your Cardinals (or anyone playing the Cubs)!
