Red Sox vs Yankees Series Review
What Would This Series Look Like If The Sox Had Vladdy Jr?
First, I want to address the controversy I started this weekend in the Boston Red Sox Twitter World. If you didn’t see it, I will post it below.
Now, I stand by everything I said in this post and the blog that came with it. I want Guerrero over Casas. Sue me.
Something I did not harp on too much so as not to offend millennials was the fact that Casas went to the All-Star Game for a TikTok gig while Devers, after making the team, stayed back and nursed his shoulder. This might be a petty thing to be annoyed about, but it bothered me, especially with Casas being out since April. Devers is the leader of this team, and if he is staying back, you should, too.
I did not expect the outpouring of hate that came my way, but it was fun. I have never seen all of Red Sox Twitter so united against someone. For the most part, it was good fun, and as a result of the post, I gained a lot of followers and had some nice DM conversations. Some just spewed hate and had no numbers to back their rhetoric, but I imagine they are alone and miserable human beings.
Alright, on to the series.
Overall Takeaway
After a very tough West Coast trip, the Red Sox needed to make some noise in this series against the Yankees. While the series was entertaining, the flaws of the Red Sox roster shined bright. Weak bullpen, starters that are stretched out, players out of position, and bad defense. Everything that could have gone wrong did. Don’t get me wrong, there were encouraging signs; they seemed to respond in Game 2 whenever challenged (until the 10th, which, by the way, I hate the ghost runner rule.) They need to rebound now against the Mariners, who are also fighting for a playoff spot.
Game 1-Red Sox 9-7
Game 2- Yankees 11-8
Game 3- Yankees 8-2
What I Loved
Marcus Stroman
I was late to the TV on Saturday night and saw the Sox down quickly. For a moment, there was a sense of panic. That was quickly quelled when I saw Marcus Stroman stroll to the mound. I felt like I could go to sleep at that moment and know they were going to rock him in the face immediately.
Tyler O’Neill’s Offense
I needed to make sure to specify what part of Tyler O’Neill I loved in this series. The guy who has 3 multi-homer games in the last week I love. The guy in the outfield…. well, just wait for that.
Masataka Yoshida
I believe he is batting .350 with RISP (Runners In Scoring Position, I know you need it spelled out, Brett.) Has been coming up with clutch hits since coming off the IL. Yet, he was sitting in the dugout in a primetime game against. Sigh.
Jarren Duran’s Hustle
Turns singles into doubles at a moment’s notice. Great defense. Great biceps. Great guy.
People on X apparently are upset that the team isn’t trading him this deadline, which is crazier than my Guerrero Jr take.
Danny Jansen Starting
Can’t complain about multiple hits in his debut. I'm not sure how I feel about Cora trying to have Wong play 2B or 1B to make room for Jansen on certain days. Feels weird.
What I Was "Mid" About
Kind of a love/hate type of series.
What I Didn't Love
ESPN
It is worse than watching the games on YES Network.
DEFENSE
I can’t even blame half of these players because Cora has them out of position half the time.
Aaron Judge
He is good at baseball.
Ceddanne Rafaela Screw Up
It was a rookie mistake, but a rookie mistake that cost the team a win.
Tyler O’Neill’s Defense
Games 2 and 3 were not pretty for Tyler on the defensive side. He wouldn’t have been in a position to win without his bat, but he couldn’t win with his glove in the outfield.
Jamie Westbrook Playing In A Primetime Game
Can we stop trying to make the 30-year-old who is batting .158 happen? This is a huge series, and we are starting Westbrook and sitting Yoshida, who has been in the clutch recently. Yes, I know it is a different position, but they can make it work.
