Overall Takeaway
The Boston Red Sox have all of a sudden become a pitching clinic the last 10 days. All three Red Sox starters were superb this weekend against “the best team in the American League.” While the offense was lackluster, they came through when it mattered.
My biggest issue from this weekend, is the tinkering by Alex Cora. I will go over it in my “Didn’t Love” section. In short, young players don’t learn how to hit MLB pitching from the bench.
At the end of the day, the team is over .500 and are in position to make the playoffs.
Game 1: Red Sox 2-1
Game 2: Red Sox 4-3
Game 3: Red Sox 2-0
What I Loved
Carlos Narvaez
All I need to say is below.
Hunter Dobbins/Garret Crochet/Brayan Bello
Nothing more exciting than to see Dobbins back up his words from last week. Crochet, Dobbins, and Bello combined for 21.1 innings while giving up one run.
Fun fact, I had Brayan Bello in the “mid” section as I was pre-writing this blog early in the game. He had terrible control and his pitch count was up to 60 early on. I texted Sam and Nick saying “Just need to get five innings out of him.” Boy was I surprised when Cora let him come out for the sixth, and then the seventh. Easily his best start of the season, but also his career.
Rafael Devers
I also had Rafael Devers in the “mid” section. He was 1-10 going into the middle of Sunday’s game. The home run that snuck over the monster, and his walk bump him back up.
Bullpen
Red Sox bullpen was great again this series. The starters have now gone six games in a row with at least six innings pitched. The bullpen is reaping the benefits of that and finally getting some rest. Their fatigue on “InsideThePen” has gone from the second worse in baseball, to the second best.
What I Was "Mid" About
Jarren Duran
Since the trade rumors of Duran started to leak, he has begun to unravel. Over the last seven games, he is hitting .154 with 12 strikeouts.
I don’t know how much trade talks affect him, but the timing is interesting.
What I Didn't Love
Having To Watch On YES
I like Michael Kay the person and the radio host. I can not stand Michael Kay the Yankee announcer. The game was very difficult to watch today. I need to get a VPN.
TINKERING
On Friday all the changes Cora made in game resulted in 0-5 with three strikeouts. On Saturday, Anthony came in and went 0-1. On Sunday, Anthony was 0-1, Mayer was 0-1, and
Mayer/Anthony/Narvaez Not Playing Sunday
I understand the matchup aspect, and also the team going on a West Coast trip starting tomorrow. However, sometimes you have to feel the vibes, and right now a sweep of the Yankees with all the starters out there would be huge for team morale and chemistry. How are Anthony and Mayer supposed to get better facing MLB lefties if they are just sitting?
