Overall Takeaway
This might have been the most draining weekend of baseball I have had in a while. Not only did I sit and watch all three games of the series, but I also binged The Clubhouse: A Year With The Boston Red Sox. There is very little I can say positively about either. I will be giving a full review of the documentary tomorrow. Spoiler: it did not get five stars.
Game 1: White Sox 11-1
Game 2: White Sox 3-2
Game 3: Red Sox 3-1
What I Loved
Garrett Crochet
It would have been more meaningful if he had come back to Chicago and shut them out to finish a sweep of the series. Instead, Garrett had to go out and win a desperation game. Only hit was a moderately barreled single to left field. Alex Cora was at the mound before the hitter was at first base. Should have kept him out there.
Having an ace is just such a good feeling.
The Soup From The Supermarket Up The Road
The weather up here in Boston has been miserable. Couple that with the misery of the series and the documentary, and I needed a pick-me-up. That came in a nice pint of lobster bisque from the local supermarket. Honestly, it was the highlight of this weekend.
Alex Cora Finally Moving Triston Casas Out Of The Cleanup Spot
Way overdue! It should have been done when Wilyer was the greatest player on the planet. Instead, Cora waited a little too long.
I hope that it fixes Casas.
Alex Bregman And Trevor Story
They were really the only two players that were consistent over the series.
Story had hits all three games, and won Boston the game Sunday. Would have had two home runs if not for the windy city. Will be excited to see him at the minor league park in Tampa.
What I Was "Mid" About
Missing Kyle Teel
Catcher is the weakest position for the Red Sox this year. (I guess you could argue 1B with Casas is weaker.) So, I spent a lot of this weekend dreaming about Kyle Teel. I was then put back into reality when Garrett Crochet dominated.
Still, the team must get a catcher at the deadline if the team is in it come July.
Bullpen
They weren’t great, but Chapman redeemed them (and himself) Sunday.
Hendriks seems to be close to returning, which would let Chapman take a rest after an outing.
What I Didn't Love
Pulling Garret Crochet
Alex Cora was at the mound before the Meridoth was at first base. No one could touch Garrett. Let him finish the inning for goodness sake.
The Offense
About half the team was horrendous this weekend. No one had a good series across the board. They would get a few hits, then go hitless the next game. No consistency from anyone. I’m not going to harp on anyone in particular.
If Cora was as open to moving the batting order as he was shifting Kristian Campbell’s position every day, this team could have won the series against the White Sox. Keeping Triston Casas at the cleanup position for three weeks was criminal.
DEFENSE
Red Sox have the worse defense in the league right now ranking 30th in fielding percentage, and first in errors (19.)
Does it have anything to do with players moving all over the field? Probably, but I will have to dig a little deeper. Blake Sabol really killed them on Friday.
