I should be at my fiancée’s bridal shower right now.
Instead, I’m watching the Braves wipe the floor with the Boston Red Sox.
I do it for the love of the sport—but I also lead from the front.
Overall Takeaway
Last season, the Red Sox could have been five games under .500 and I still would’ve been happy. The team was building and showing signs of life. Now, with two of the best players wasting away in Triple-A, there’s nothing to cheer for.
When I saw Kristian Campbell taking grounders at first base, I almost threw up. In what world is taking an athletic 22-year-old and putting him at first base the right move? Take Trevor Story—the aging superstar who’s not performing on offense or defense—and stick him at first.
At this moment, I’ve lost all respect for Alex Cora and Craig Breslow. Not only have they consistently disrespected their only offensive star, but they continue to disrespect the fans by refusing…
Game Results
Game 1: Braves 4–2
Game 2: Red Sox 7–6
Game 3: Braves 10–4
What I Loved
Rafael Devers
Walk-off homer Saturday. Grand slam Sunday. He’s the only thing keeping this team afloat, and the front office seems determined to piss him off at every turn.
Garrett Crochet
Yes, he gave up two home runs—but was great otherwise. He entered the 7th with (I believe) 68 pitches. I thought he might go the distance, but after loading the bases, he got out of the jam—and his night ended there. Unfortunately, so did the Red Sox’s night. The offense did nothing, and Hendriks gave up two runs in the ninth.
What I Was “Mid” About
The Bullpen
Everyone wants to hate on the bullpen, but the starters and offense have done absolutely nothing to help them.
What I Didn’t Love
Brayan Bello / Lucas Giolito
Terrible.
Giolito is carrying a 7.08 ERA and has had one decent start this season. How much rope does he get before the team realizes they need to go out and get an arm? Take a chance on Alcantara, for goodness’ sake.
As for Bello—I’ve pointed out the lack of control and consistency. Today, for the second time in three games, Bello walked five. The Braves capitalized on every mistake, and with Bello’s seeming inability to perform under pressure, they put up seven runs in 4.1 innings.
Alex Cora and Craig Breslow
I’ll continue to list them here until they decide to field the best team possible. They haven’t.
Abraham Toro / David Hamilton / Trevor Story
Either move Story to first base or DFA him. I’m sorry, but they signed an aging star and never reaped the rewards of his former shine.
As for Toro and Hamilton—it’s time to move on.
