OVERALL TAKEAWAY
As many of you know this was a crazy week in my personal life. I got married last Saturday, went on my honeymoon, and I am now in my friends wedding (currently sitting in my tux.) Some people, I won’t name names, would take this entire week and do the bare minimum. Not me, I made sure to watch (or listen, because of Roku) the Sox each day. So, I will be able to give some thoughts in my usual format below.
However, I want to talk about the trade deadline as well. When I put out my grades at 6pm on Thursday, I gave the Red Sox a B. I’m a big fan of Dustin May, and feel that Bailey can do great work with him. Then I saw what they gave away, and I immediately gave them an F. I can’t get behind sending the one solid piece from the Devers trade away. Couple that with sending away Blaze Jordan, and Breslow loses my trust (for now.) The reports that other GM’s don’t like dealing with the Red Sox now also doesn’t help.
Say what you want, but the Red Sox have now passed the Yankees and are only a few games out of first in the AL East. They are actually only a few games back from having the best record in the league.
The next two months are going to be a movie. Whatever it’s a horror or not is yet to be seen.
Series Scores
• Game 1: Red Sox 2 - Astros 1 (F/10)
• Game 2: Red Sox 7 - Astros 3
• Game 3: Red Sox 6 - Astros 1
What I Loved
• Roman Anthony
Cora is no longer holding him back as we are seeing Anthony playing almost everyday. He has a 10 game on base streak, and had his first career walk off on Friday.
• Bullpen
The bullpen continues to be one of the best in baseball. In Game 1 they came in and did not let any runners on base.
Starting Pitching
Criswell and Giolito were great. Buehler was terrible, but was able to keep the Astros to only 3 runs.
What I Was ‘Mid’ About
Jarren Duran
Duran heated up as the deadline approached and was the best player on the team for a week. Have to imagine that made it difficult to move him (I’m happy they didn’t.) However, he cooled off during this series, but he wasn’t needed.
• Ceddanne Rafaela:
Rafaela has been playing superb defense as usual. His bat cooled off the last 15 games, but came alive in this series. Cora continues to move him between 2B and CF, which I don’t love.
What I Didn’t Love
NOTHING
When you sweep one of the best teams in the league after a “disappointing” trade deadline, there is nothing to be upset about.
One thing Breslow can do is throw together a good bullpen, I will give him that
