Rafael Devers is the best player the Red Sox have.
Sure, Alex Bregman is on a tear right now — but let’s be real: if he keeps this up, he’s likely opting out and chasing a bigger payday elsewhere. Devers, on the other hand, chose to spend the rest of his prime in Boston.
When he signed that long-term deal, he was told he’d be the team’s third baseman for the foreseeable future. Then, this offseason, the Red Sox brought in Bregman and essentially told Devers to take a hike. If you’ve played any sport beyond middle school — which many of the Twitter takes suggest some folks haven’t — you can understand why he’s frustrated.
And let’s be clear: Devers has been excellent since his slow start.
.834 OPS
6 HR
25 RBI
20th in BBI (5.91)
25th in BBI+ (5.35)
So why rock the boat?
Devers is right. Craig Breslow should be out making a deal for a real first baseman. The front office misread the roster and didn’t plan well for the surge of young talent. Now top prospects like Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony are stuck in the minors when they should be developing in the big leagues.
I’ve been relatively pro-Breslow up to this point, but if this isn’t handled carefully, it could spiral into a major issue.
In simple terms, who cares.
Here are the quotes from Devers interview. I also added the video itself if you would like to indulge.
“They had the conversation with me. I don’t think, personally, it’s the best decision after they asked me to play a different position. I’ve only had two months playing this position and all of a sudden try and have me play another position. So, from my end, it doesn’t seem like a good decision.”
“I know I’m a ballplayer but at the same time they can’t expect me to play every single position out there. In spring training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove. I wasn’t going to play any other position but DH. So right now I don’t think it’s an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.”
“They told me they didn’t want to allow me to play any other position and now I think they should do their job essentially, hit the market and look for another player. I’m not sure why they want me to be in between the way they have me now.”
