The other night, I was writing one of my Red Sox blogs when my girlfriend asked, “Are you getting paid for this?” Of course, I responded truthfully with a “maybe. Why do you want to know?” This led to a back-and-forth on the value of my taking time to write for our beautiful little website.
So, I began to ponder what is next in my life here at The Skippers View. Writing a hundred blogs a year is no easy task, but I have done it in hopes of growing the brand. While we are still in our infancy, a loyal group seems to show up and click on our emails every day consistently. It’s not about the money for me; I am a realist and know that is never going to happen, especially with me carrying Brett on my back at the same time. I am here for the community and hope to one day walk onto Fenway Park’s field with a press pass and speak to a player. Why not me?
I have done two things to take that next step in that journey. First, I sent my resume to MLB in hopes of being a “freelance writer.” While the chances of this are small, they are not impossible. In my digging on the website and X, there is an actual argument that I have a more extensive reach than some of the current writers. In no way does that mean I am a better writer, but who knows?
Second, I have reached out to inquire about how to register as a BBWAA writer. There are levels to gain membership, and each chapter has a different set of guidelines in its constitution. However, I dived pretty deep into the “BBWAA Constitution,” and there is a non-zero chance that I could qualify. If you are going off the overall constitution, my biggest hurdle is “professional journalist.” Now, here me out here. Technically, The Skippers View is a legal entity in my state. It isn’t just an X account that I run; it is a legit business. I would argue that it falls under the umbrella of “professional.”
In terms of writing, I have put out almost 200 blogs in the last year and a half and have consistently reported on nearly every Red Sox series this season. If you want to get into impressions on X between the main account and my personal account it’s well over 50 million at this point.
While a long shot, I believe there is an avenue in which I can achieve this dream.
Updates to come.
