Editors Note: I started this blog in mid-May. I stopped because I felt it would be better to put it out closer to the Hall of Fame Induction. I picked players for the Diamondbacks-Tigers. I decided to italicize those picks to distinguish them from the ones I am making now. I stand by most of them, with the exception of Carroll. All the stats were added as of July 20th, 2024.
I am using Baseball Reference for all the statistics mentioned in this blog. I did put a lot of thought and research into this. Conservatively, I would guess I spent more time on this blog than Brett has in his last ten. I learned a lot, and now have dedicated my life to getting Bill Dahlen into the Hall of Fame.
Editors Note 2: It is essential to remember the 2020 season was essentially nothing for a lot of these players. I believe that voters will consider this when these guys are up on the ballot. I also feel strongly that the standard for pitchers will be lowered significantly. Look at Chris Sale for my thoughts on that.
Editors Note 3: If you are new and just finding us here at The Skippers View, please consider subscribing for free at the bottom of this blog. You won’t regret it!
Arizona Diamondbacks: Corbin Carroll
Wow. This pick really did not turn out great! I am standing by it though. Also, there aren’t many options on the Diamondbacks.
Key Stats: Rookie of The Year/ speed.
Atlanta Braves: Chris Sale
This pick looks great based on how his season has gone. As I said above, I think Chris Sale will reset the pitcher standard for the Hall of Fame.
Key Stats:
2329 SO/ 138 ERA+/ 1.04 WHIP/ 11.1 K/9.
JAWS 44.6 tied with Felix Hernandez
WAR 7 38.9 above John Smoltz
WAR 7 adj 38.9 TIED with Jim Palmer
Baltimore Orioles: Adley Rutschman
If I was writing this blog over again, I would still put Adley. Catchers have a slightly easier path to the HOF.
Key Stats:
2x All-Star/ 1x Silver Slugger/129 OPS+/ 5.9 WAR/162 (4th All-Time C)
Boston Red Sox: Rafael Devers
Amongst players under 30 years old. I put Devers as the closest thing to a lock on making it to Cooperstown. His shoulder will be the biggest hurdle in his path.
Key Stats:
2x Silver Slugger/ 3x All-Star/ 128 OPS+/ 195 HR/ 1012 Hits/ Father of Gerrit Cole
Chicago Cubs: Cody Bellinger
If Shota Imanaga wasn’t 30 years old. I would be putting him here.
Key Stats:
Rookie of The Year/ 1x MVP/ 2x Silver Slugger/
Chicago White Sox: Luis Robert Jr
If Lou Bob makes goes to the Hall, it will not be in a White Sox uniform.
Key Stats:
1x All-Star/ 1x Silver Slugger/ 1x Gold Glove/125 OPS+
Cincinnati Reds: Elly De La Cruz
Elly De La Cruz is fun to watch, so don’t get me wrong. However, of the Top 20 All-Time Stolen Base Leaders, only ten are in the Hall of Fame. He isn’t getting there on speed alone, and right now, he is a slightly above-average hitter.
Key Stats:
30 HR/ 82 SB/ 107 OPS+/ 1x All-Star
Cleveland Guardians: Jose Ramirez
Ramirez significantly improved his HOF chance by staying with the Guardians. Combined with the fake 2020 year, it will come in handy when voting occurs.
Key Stats:
4x Silver Slugger/ 6x All-Star/48.6 WAR/ 239 HR/129 OPS+
WAR7- 40.2 (21st All-Time 3B)
JAWS- 44.4 (26th All-Time 3B)
WAR/162- 5.7(10th All-Time 3B)
Colorado Rockies: Kris Bryant
Somehow, Kris Bryant is the last person I am looking at when writing this blog. I started from the top and then somehow went to the bottom and found myself here hours later with Kris Bryant. I am tired, and my eyes hurt, which is what I imagine Rockies fans feel when watching Bryant play this year.
Key Stats:
1x MVP/ Rookie Of The Year/ 126 OPS+/ 4x All-Star/ 184 HR
Detroit Tigers: Tarik Skubal
It's one of the many teams on this list with really no options. I don’t think Skubal has a shot in heck of making the HOF, but he’s their best option right now.
Key Stats:
1x All-Star/ 1.08 WHIP/ 3.53 FIP/ 119 ERA+/ Cool name
Houston Astros: Jose Altuve
I am going to keep this short (no pun intended.) If Altuve gets in, I want Dustin Pedroia walking in with him. That is all (go do the research you will see.)
Key Stats:
2x MVP/ 6x Silver Slugger/ 1x Gold Glove/ 9x All-Star
2166 hits/ 223 HR/ .307 AVG/ 791 RBI
WAR- 52.3 ( 22nd All-Time 2B)
WAR7- 39.8 (17th All-Time 2B)
JAWS- 46.1 (20th All-Time 2B)
WAR/162- 4.8 (32nd All-Time 2B)
Kansas City Royals: Bobby Witt Jr
A lot of Salvador Perez fans aren’t going to like this one. Perez is great, but at best, he will be a borderline HOFer. Witt, on the other hand, has the chance to be the Top 5 player of his generation.
Key Stats:
67 HR/ 101 SB/ .281 AVG/ 122 OPS+
Los Angeles Angels: Mike Trout
Read below after you finish this Hall of Fame blog. Everything is there.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Mookie Betts
Mookie Betts's HOF metrics are insane. Outside of standard WAR, it is just him and the GOATS. One of the few players who could retire now at 31 and enter the Hall on the first ballot.
Key Stats: 1x MVP/ 8x All-Star/ 6x Silver Slugger/ 6x Gold Glove.
WAR- 68.7 (14th All-Time RF)
WAR7- 55.0 (4th All-Time RF)
JAWS- 61.9 (8th All-Time RF)
WAR/162- 8.3 (3rd All-Time RF)
Miami Marlins: Sandy Alcantara
He won’t, but he has a Cy Young, so it’s the best they got.
Key Stats: 1x Cy Young/ 2x All-Star
Milwaukee Brewers: Christian Yelich
Christian’s 2020-2023 knocked him off his HOF trajectory. However, his 2024 might be putting him back on track. Time will tell, but my heart tells me he will be the “Hall Of Very Good.” Leftfield is just so competitive, and he really doesn’t stack up with anyone at the moment.
Key Stats:
1x MVP/ 3x All-Star/ 3x Silver Slugger/ 1x Gold Glove
204 HR/ .288 AVG/ 948 Rs/ 200 SB/ 130 OPS+
Minnesota Twins: Carlos Correa
I vomit having to write nice things about Correa. I think he is the most overrated player of this generation: no MVPs, no Silver Sluggers, no healthy ankles.
Key Stats: ROY/ 3x All-Star/ 1x Gold Glove
WAR- 44.4 (35th All-Time SS)
WAR7- 38.3 (24th All-Time SS)
JAWS- 41.4 ( 31st All-Time SS)
WAR 162- 6.6 (13th All-Time SS)
New York Mets: Francisco Lindor
You probably thought I was going to take this opportunity to praise Francisco Lindor. You would be wrong. I will put Lindor’s impressive stats below, but I will take this time to talk about Bill Dahlen. He is SS/3B, who played from 1890-1911. Here are his rankings. Cooperstown needs to rectify this.
Dahlen
WAR- 75.3 (9th All-Time SS)
WAR7- 40.1 (20th All-Time SS)
JAWS- 57.7 (10th All-Time SS)
Lindor
JAWS- 42.4 (27th All-Time SS)
WAR- 46.4 (29th All-Time SS)
WAR7- 38.4 (23rd All-Time SS)
New York Yankees: Aaron Judge
When you are finished with this blog, jump over to my Trout/Judge one. Lays out why both are HOFers.
Oakland Athletics: Jacob Wilson
Yeah, good luck making an argument for an A’s player.
Key Stats: He is young.
Philadelphia Phillies: Bryce Harper
Harper’s HOF "analytics” don’t pop out at you. He is lower than one would think because he has been around so long. Frankly, you could make a real argument that he is overrated if you go by that. But…. he has two MVPs, which is more than most of the players on this list. He will finish his career close to 70 WAR and will probably get on in the first two ballots.
Key Stats: ROY/ 2x MVP/ 3x Silver Slugger/ 8x All-Star
50.0 WAR/ 327 HR/ 137 SB/ 950 RBI/144 OPS+
WAR- 50.0 (32nd All-Time RF)
WAR7- 37.5 (29th All-Time RF)
JAWS- 43.7 (30th All-Time RF)
WAR/162- 5.1 (25th All-Time RF)
Pittsburgh Pirates: Andrew McCutchen
I can not get sucked into the Paul Skenes hype and declare him a HOFer. That being said, I don’t think McCutchen ever actually gets in. If he does, it will be on the Veterans Committee forty years from now. His 2012-2015 was insane, but outside of that, he has done very little.
Key Stats: 1x MVP/ 5x All-Star/ 4x Silver Slugger
49.2 WAR/127 OPS+/ 2119 hits/ 311 HR/ 219 SB
San Diego Padres: Manny Machado
Trout and Harper have overshadowed Machado in the last decade. Trout with superior numbers and Harper with superior swag.
Key Stats: 6x All-Star/ 2x Gold Glove/ 1x Silver Slugger
1830 hits/ .279 AVG/ 326 HR/ 996 RBI/ 124 OPS+
WAR- 55.6 (21st amongst 3B)
WAR7- 42.4 (17th amongst 3B)
JAWS- 49.0 (20th amongst 3B)
San Francisco Giants: Logan Webb
It's another team with no real player that stands out. Blake Snell is the only person on the team with significant awards, but outside of those two seasons, he is very mid. So, I will go slightly younger and see if Webb can hold that 119 ERA+.
Key Stats: 1x All-Star/ 119 ERA+
Seattle Mariners: Julio Rodriguez
Julio really needs to finish the season strong, so I can feel good about this pick. He currently holds a .686 OPS with a barely above-average 101 OPS+. Hall of Famers don’t suck this early on! (sarcasm)
Key Stats: Rookie of The Year/ 30/30 Season/ 128 OPS+/ 2x All-Star/ 2x Silver Slugger
St. Louis Cardinals: Nolan Arenado
I'm flipping the coin between Arenado and Goldschmidt here. A lot of people are going to give me flack for this one. My thought process behind this is the three-year age gap between them. I think Arenado snags a few more GGs, bringing him close to Brooks Robinson. Arenado will become one of the Top Ten greatest defenders in MLB history.
Key Stats: 10x Gold Glove/ 5x Silver Slugger/ 8x All-Star/ 333 HR/ 121 OPS+
WAR 7- 44.3 (above eight other HOF 3B)
JAWS- 49.7
This actually hurts him as he is below the average here. He finds himself smack in between Evan Longoria and Manny Machado here.
WAR/162- 5.5 (14th All-Time among 3B)
Tampa Bay Rays: Taj Bradley
Let’s be honest: No one from this team is making the HOF. I am giving Bradley the spot here due to his youth and high K rate.
Key Stats: 11.2 K/9
Texas Rangers: Max Scherzer
This is one of the obvious ones, so just going to throw his stats below.
Key Stats: 3x Cy Young, 8x All-Star/ 75.6 bWAR/ 3.14 ERA/ 3390 SO/ 134 ERA+
Toronto Blue Jays: Vladimir Guerrero Jr
Brett, for some reason, thinks that Bo Bichette is more valuable than Vladdy Jr. That is why we don’t listen to Brett. Vladdy does not turn 26 until next March. His 2021 season is very easily forgotten because of Shohei Ohtani winning the MVP, but Vladdy was the best hitter in the American League by far. He “cooled off” in 2022 and 2023 but has bounced back in 2024, putting up his best OPS+ since that 2021 season. He is never going to be a crazy WAR while playing 1B, so need to keep that in mind. Regardless, he is my pick here.
Key Stats: 4x All-Star/145 HR/131 OPS+/17.4 bWAR
Washington Nationals: CJ Abrams
This is another tough one, and I must choose between two young stars in Abrams and Woods. I am going Abrams simply because he has played so far lol. He could be a 20/20 guy for the next decade.
Key Stats: 6.6 bWAR/ 69 SB/ 35 HR/Swag
