The best time of the baseball calendar is upon us. The PLAYOFFS! Now if the playoffs were to start today here is the field that would be partaking in the postseason.Â
American League:Â
New York Yankees
Cleveland Guardians
Houston Astros
Baltimore OriolesÂ
Kansas City Royals
Minnesota Twins
National League:
Philadelphia Phillies
Los Angeles Dodgers
Milwaukee Brewers
San Diego Padres
Arizona Diamondbacks
New York Mets
As I dive into the projected playoff matchups (as of today!), I started to think about how the postseason was going to unfold. I came up with a few things that I can see happening in the 2024 playoffs. Maybe not as much of a HOT take today as my Judge/Soto Co-MVP position but still something to think about.Â
1) The Orioles will be eliminated in the Wild Card round!
This is an assumption that the Orioles do not go on to win the American League East. This is not a biased Yankees fan bash, I just don’t see the pitching being able to get it done. You need pitching to win in the playoffs. The Orioles staff as a whole has put up a 3.95 ERA for the 2024 season which is 15th best in MLB. Every team in the American League playoffs will have a better cumulative ERA besides the Twins who come in at a 4.20 ERA. I simply think this team has suffered too many injuries to the rotation and bullpen for them to go far in the postseason this year.
2) Juan Soto wins World Series MVP
Juan Soto was built for the spotlight and I think this is just his year. Now having homered in all 30 parks and joining the 200 career HR club this week, there is nothing this man can’t do on a baseball diamond. Did I mention he has hit 40 bombs this season already, which is a career-high for him in a single season?!? Soto is on a money year and the Yankees are currently enjoying a 4 game lead in the American League East. It just seems right that Soto goes on to lead this team in the postseason.
3) The New York Yankees will win the World Series
Well if Soto wins the World Series MVP, that means the Yankees must have won the World Series. New York has been in a World Series drought since 2009 and I believe that is about to come to an end. Ranked both in the top 10 in team ERA (3.76) and team batting average (.250) this team has more balance than meets the eye. The starting pitching when right is incredible and we have seen that this season. Rolling out a healthy and productive Gerrit Cole (3.97) followed by Luis Gil (3.14), Carlos Rodon (4.12), Nestor Cortes (3.90), Marcus Stroman (4.04), and Clarke Schmidt (2.41)Â might be one of the deepest rotations in all of baseball. Yes, they do lack bullpen strength but can tinker come playoff time. Luis Gil to the closer role? Depends on how Luke Weaver and Tommy Kahnle play out but there are options. What this is really going to come down to is if the Yankees can get the bats going outside of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. I think they will catch a spark and we shall see the men in pinstripes champions again!
