Are the Yankees Going Green?

Nothing like a good ole family reunion

Is there a reunion that is about to unfold in the American League East? I think so. RHP Chad Green will be dealt in one of the many trades the Toronto Blue Jays should make at the deadline. The question is, where will the right-handed reliever be traded by July 30th? My gut tells me Green will end up back with the Yankees following a 2-year stint with Toronto. 

With Toronto sitting at the bottom of the division, one would have to think Green is one of the pieces that will be moved at the deadline. Green underwent Tommy John surgery in the middle of the 2022 season and is not striking out batters in the same manner he used to, but he is getting outs nonetheless. 

Now, the Blue Jays may have to eat some of the 33-year-old’s contract to entice a team to trade for him, but I think this would make the Yankees an even easier trade partner as they have already enjoyed Green's services. Yankee fans would welcome Green back with open arms, especially if the price is right!

Green can be valuable to any team in need of relief pitching. That being said, I am not sure what the asking price will be from Toronto. I am just hoping it is not too expensive for the Yankees' wallet, as I think they could use him down the stretch. Green relies on a 3-pitch-mix to attack hitters, and his arsenal includes a Four Seam Fastball (64.1%), a Slider (34.5%), and a Cutter (1.4%). The crazy thing I noticed is he has only thrown the cutter 6x this season, and it has a 100% Whiff Rate, according to Baseball Savant. Is this his secret weapon? I also see he hasn’t used a Cutter since 2017! Honestly, his baseball-savant page is one of the more intriguing ones out there, so definitely go give him a look. 

The long story short here is the Yankees need a ton of help both with pitching and hitting at the deadline. If they want to realistically make a run at a World Series title this year they need to make a few deals and one should be centered around getting Green back to the Bronx to help bolster the bullpen.
