Editor's Note: I'm still refining BBI, ABBI, and BBI+. I’m currently leaning toward switching from a 0–5 scale to a 0–10 scale. Stay tuned for updates.
Welcome to the 100+ new subscribers who joined recently! Many of you came on board after I released my BBI, ABBI, and BBI+ analytics. Funny enough — this very blog about torpedo bats is what inspired those stats in the first place.
I’ve been tracking fifteen players using torpedo bats this season to evaluate their performance. What frustrated me early on was the lack of a simple, results-based analytic to show actual improvement. That’s where BBI comes in. It combines AVG, HR, and SLG with Exit Velocity and Barrel %. For players with fewer than 100 ABs, I used ABBI, which adjusts for small sample size by regressing stats toward league averages.
I wanted a streamlined way to look at real production and Statcast quality. So I ran the numbers for each player’s 2024 season using BBI and compared them to 2025.
Here’s what I found:
🔼 10 of the 15 players have higher BBI scores in 2025.
🔻 2 players regressed.
⚠️ 2 didn’t have enough 2024 data to compare.
Does this mean torpedo bats are making a meaningful difference? The early returns say yes.
I’ll do another check-in at the end of May. But for now, here’s where everyone stands:
