For those unaware, Baseball Savant is MLB’s official website for storing and analyzing advanced statistics and analytics. While I would be lying if I claimed that I have an in-depth understanding of each and every metric on a given Baseball Savant page, I can generally tell which players are analytical darlings and which are not. While it is expected that players such as Shohei Ohtani or Aaron Judge would have Savant pages resembling Drago’s shorts from Rocky IV (quite red for the uncultured folks out there), I was shocked to see the relatively unknown players that are considered elite by analytics.
Disclaimer: I am fully aware that it is incredibly early in the season and these trends are likely due to a lack of substantial sample size. However, it is still a fun exercise, and if you have a problem with it, you are absolutely a loser.
Luis Torrens
Luis Torrens has been in the league for eight years now but has never really found a home. In those eight seasons, he has played for 4 different teams and has only played more than 60 games in a season once (he played 108 games during the 2021 season with the Seattle Mariners). However, in his second season with the Mets, Luis has become the temporary starting catcher due to an injury sustained by Francisco Alveraz and Torrens has wasted no time taking advantage of the situation. The career backup catcher hasn’t put up startling statistics on the surface, but his advanced metrics are wild enough to put the biggest baseball nerd you know into a coma. I could list off the percentiles he has found himself in for each statistical category, but a screenshot of his Baseball Savant page will be much more effective in conveying my point:
Logan O’Hoppe
Next on the list, we move across the country but stay behind the plate with Los Angeles Angels’ catcher Logan O’Hoppe. The Long Island native (had to shout out Long Island really quick) had an incredible start to the 2024 season, his first full season as a starter, before falling victim to a midseason slump that lowered his numbers to a more pedestrian level. Regardless, his Baseball Savant percentiles were incredible, as he was significantly above average in xSLG, barrel%, hardhit%, and LA Sweet Spot% (the latter of which he was within the 100th percentile for the entire MLB). The start of 2025 has been no different for O’Hoppe as he ranks among the best in baseball for multiple statistical categories. However, he does suffer from an unbelievably high whiff %, chase %, and K%, just like he did last season. Nevertheless, if O’Hoppe can keep up this level of performance, he will certainly be an All-Star come July.
Jack Leiter
It appears that the highly touted college standout (and son of a former All-Star pitcher) Jack Leiter has finally arrived. Leiter was the 2nd pick in the 2021 MLB draft, and since that point, Rangers fans have been patiently awaiting his arrival to the Major Leagues. The hype surrounding Leiter (and his former Vanderbilt and current Ranger teammate Kumar Rocker) has been incredibly high, yet he has certainly lived up to the lofty expectations throughout his first two starts in 2025. In his 10 IP, Leiter struck out 10 batters and only surrendered 6 hits and 1 earned run. Equally impressive, his Baseball Savant page is not indifferent from Cy Young favorites such as Paul Skenes and Cole Ragans. Leiter suffered an injury during his second start, so we unfortunately will have to wait a few weeks to see him pitch again, but regardless, Jack Leiter has earned the attention of baseball fans around the country.
