It is time for me to face the music and review my 2025 MLB Award predictions.
Spoiler, they are terrible. Here are my picks from March and how they are playing.
American League MVP- Mike Trout
.238 AVG/ 17 HR/ 41 RBI/ .836 OPS/ 1.0 bWAR
National League MVP- Juan Soto
.262 AVG/ 23 HR/ 70 RBI/ .905 OPS/ 3.9 bWAR
National League Cy Young- Sandy Alcantara
7.22 ERA/ 1.484 WHIP/ 60 ERA+/ -1.6 bWAR
American League Cy Young- Cole Ragans
5.18 ERA/ 1.29 WHIP/ 79 ERA+/ -0.2 bWAR
American League Champion- Red Sox
Ended the first half on 10 10-game win streak.
National League Champion- New York Mets
2nd in NL East. Need pitching!
World Series Winner- Boston Red Sox
Feeling good about this.
The only picks I feel okay about are the Red Sox and Juan Soto. The predictions I gave for Soto are not too far off from what he is producing. However, I will not be sticking with him for my new predictions.
NEW PREDICTIONS
American League MVP- Cal Raleigh
I added the Stathead graphic because it is the easiest to see their two stats. However, in fWAR, it is a lot closer (7.4 to 6.2)
Judge is the better hitter (obviously), but Raleigh is playing the hardest position in baseball better than anyone has in a decade. I added the last two catchers who won the MVP. Unless he falls off a cliff, he will have the best offensive season we have seen from a catcher in two decades.
National League MVP- Shohei Ohtani
I was hoping that someone else would come in and take down Ohtani. I’m not a hater, I just wanted to see someone different. It won’t be Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Juan Soto would need to have a generational second half. Even though Ohtani is only an “opener”, he has been shut down on the mound. By September, he will be going 6+ innings and bashing home runs in the same game; there is no stopping the inevitable.
National League Cy Young- Paul Skenes
Gambling odds have Zach Wheeler as the favorite. I don’t think that being the strikeout leader will win you the Cy Young. Voters have no problem choosing someone on a terrible team (look at Jacob DeGrom). So, I am now voting for Skenes.
American League Cy Young- Garrett Crochet
Pick Skubal, pick Crochet, it is a toss-up. Crochet leads the league in ERA+ and SO.
I want to see another Boston Cy Young, sue me.
American League Champion- Red Sox
I have to stick with my team, but I actually believe this.
National League Champion- New York Mets
Steve Cohen will make sure they go get a pitcher at the deadline.
World Series Winner- Boston Red Sox
Feeling good about this. Best team in baseball, just need one more pitcher.
